At Telavi Regional Court, Ambassador Degnan reiterated that strengthening rule of law in Georgia continues to be a high priority for the U.S. Government. This is reflected through the work of the 30 offices and agencies of the U.S. Mission to Georgia, many of which work with Georgian partners to build and strengthen the country’s democratic institutions. Specifically, the U.S. Department of Justice’s work with the Telavi court to build modern courtrooms to support jury trials, continuous court, and better evidentiary processes and USAID’s new rule of law program to help courts throughout Georgia become more responsive to the needs of their communities. Ambassador Degnan also took time to note: “The heartbreaking events in Ukraine do not diminish the U.S. Government’s ability to uphold our commitments to Georgia. On the contrary, we are determined to continue supporting the Georgian people’s efforts to build democracy and to pursue their Euro-Atlantic aspirations.”
