Ambassador Kelly’s comment to Rustavi 2 following his tour of the station facilities and meeting with the staff (November 1)
Q-n from Rustavi 2: If the Ambassador’s visit to Rustavi 2 is a “clear signal” that the USG supports the channel
Ambassador Kelly: I think this visit has been a long time coming. I have been here over a year and I am very glad to have this opportunity to come. I had a very good tour of the facilities here and met with all of the journalists. I would not say that this was any kind of new signal on my part. I think our consistent message has been that the United Sates supports media pluralism; that the Georgian people need to have access to all points of view, need to hear all the different actors in society and in politics. And, in order for democracy to thrive and survive, there needs to be channels like Rustavi 2 that present all points of view. I did not come here really necessarily to support Rustavi 2. I mean I am an American diplomat and I do not support one television station over another; but what I do support is what Rustavi 2 represents. And the existence of Rustavi 2 means that there is pluralism in the media scene in Georgia, which is the absolute lifeblood of democracy.
