On June 22 in Batumi, Ambassador Norland welcomed Georgian approximately 130 secondary school students to the first ever “Summer English by the Sea” summer school held at the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.  The summer school was founded by Marya Innis, a US Peace Corps Response Volunteer, with the support of the university’s rector, Professor Merab Khalvashi, and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Marine Giorgadze.  The goal of the summer school is to immerse students in an English-only learning environment where they practice English conversational skills while learning about American culture.  US Peace Corps volunteers, English teachers from the university and local schools, and student facilitators volunteered their time and service at the summer school.  It is hoped that “Summer English by the Sea” will be successful and continue to be held in the years to come.
