CDA Berliner’s remarks to press
On recent comments made by U.S. Congressman Russell about Georgia
CDA Berliner: I am aware of Congressman Russell’s comments and, of course, our members of congress are free to make any statements they like. There are 535 of them, let’s remember, in Congress. But, of course, that does not represent the policy of the U.S. government or the U.S. administration.
On recent comments made by Ambassador Lute
CDA Berliner: Let me just also clarify in response to some statements that were reported yesterday from our ambassador to NATO, Ambassador Lute. I just wanted to make very clear that the position of the United States government has not changed. We support Georgia’s NATO aspirations, we support the open door policy, and as you know, in 2008 in Bucharest the NATO allies in consensus said that Georgia will one day become a member of NATO. And we stand by that Bucharest statement.
