CDA Elizabeth Rood’s Comment to Media at Biltmore Hotel (November 30)
Q-n about the significance of the consensus between the ruling party and the opposition, and If this can be achieved
CDA Rood; As you recall, the United States, along with the European Union Delegation, expressed a strong hope and called for a dialogue after the failure of the constitutional amendments to move to fully proportional Parliamentary elections in 2020. We are very pleased that the dialogue is beginning here today. As I view it, the purpose of this dialogue is to search for options, rather than to exclude options. The United States is very pleased to be able to support this dialogue through USAID, which has funded today’s venue. And we are very pleased also that we have the Secretary of the Venice Commission, Thomas Markert, to provide advice and expertise to the process. I am here simply to support the process along with the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation, and the Ambassador of Germany. It is my hope that all of the representatives here will demonstrate today that Georgians can rely on their democratic institutions, and their shared commitment to integration with the Euro-Atlantic community, to find the best way forward in the interests of the Georgian nation.
Q-n if the so-called German model is the best solution to come out of the “crisis”
CDA Rood: It is not really up to me to evaluate any given model. Again, I hope that this dialogue seeks not to exclude one option or another, but to find solutions.
