CDA Elizabeth Rood’s Media Comments following the Fourth Round of the Meeting between the Ruling Party and the Opposition (December 20)

Question about the results

CDA Elizabeth Rood: I would say that this fourth round of dialogue again demonstrated the value of this format for the ruling party and the opposition representatives to come together and discuss the problems and challenges facing the political situation now. And, I would welcome the fact that the ruling party brought to the table today a new proposal with respect to the electoral system. The sides exchanged views on this proposal and did not reach any agreement on it today, but everyone did agree to reflect further and to come back in January to continue the dialogue.

Question about steps to overcome the current political crisis

CDA Elizabeth Rood: I think this is going to require to continued hard work, a demonstration of good will on all sides, a willing to compromise, and, in the meantime, also strictly following of the rule of law with respect to interactions on the street and, in general, everyone trying to maintain a calm situation that facilitates the environment for constructively addressing problems.

Question about the statement by the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee

CDA Elizabeth Rood: Well, as a member of the executive branch of my own government, I really have to refer you to the congressmen’s offices for their comments on expressions of the congressional branch.

Question about Kelly Degnan’s arrival

CDA Elizabeth Rood: I am pleased to convey the news that Kelly Degnan, our Ambassador nominee, was confirmed by the full Senate yesterday. I do not have yet the exact timeline, but we expect she will begin to make her preparations for arrival, and we hope it will be soon.
