Chargé d’Affaires Elizabeth Rood’s comment to media on the margins of a Georgian Government meeting on the “Step for Better a Future” peace initiative (April 18)

Q-n about Step for Better a Future project for the occupied territories of Georgia and how the Embassy plans to support it

Elizabeth Rood: The United States, first of all, firmly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and we support the Georgian government in its efforts to strengthen its territorial integrity. We believe that the initiatives of the Georgian government for trade facilitation with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and to promote more educational opportunities for the people of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, can be a very, very good step forward and we have welcomed this initiative.  We think that both initiatives provide new opportunities and new prospects for a genuine peace process, and are very positive.
