Charge d’affaires Elizabeth Rood’s Remarks to Media at the 4th of July Reception

Q-n: about the 4th of July Reception

Charge d’affaires Elizabeth Rood: It is a great pleasure to celebrate tonight the 243rd anniversary of the independence of the United States of America, and it is a special honor and pleasure to celebrate together with Prime Minister Bakhtadze, President Zourabichvili, Speaker of Parliament Talakvadze, and all of our distinguished friends and guests of the American Embassy.  We also celebrate today the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, which first put a man on the Moon. This anniversary reminds us of the incredible things that nations can do when they are free and democratic and work together. And the United States will continue to stand by Georgia in our strategic partnership in meeting the joint challenges that we face.

Q-n about the ongoing protest and investigation

Charge d’affaires Elizabeth Rood: I would simply, say as we have said before, that the events of June 20th do require an investigation that is thorough and balanced, and we support the right of peaceful freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

Q-n about Russia’s position about the ongoing events in Georgia

Charge d’affaires Elizabeth Rood: Georgia is a strong nation, a resilient nation.  It has the full support of the United States and many other partners.  Georgia can withstand the challenges it faces now, and all of us at the American Embassy are very happy and honored to be spending our Summer here in Georgia. We encourage everyone to come, spend their Summer in Georgia!
