Chargé d’Affaires Elizabeth Rood’s Remarks to Media (July 9)
CDA Rood: We here at the American Embassy are shocked and deeply saddened at the tragic killing of Ryan Smith, Lora Smith, and their son in the Khada valley. We join with all of the members of the American community as well as with the many, many, many people in Georgia, and especially in Marneuli district who were friends of the Smiths. The Smiths were extremely valuable members of our community. They had lived in Georgia for many years and had made themselves very, very important members of their community and contributed to the economic development and education of their community. We are working, cooperating closely with the Georgian authorities with respect to the investigation. We will do everything that we can to support the family members of the Smiths when they come to Georgia. And, I would also like to extend my thanks to the law enforcement authorities of Georgia, the Interior Ministry, the police, and the municipal authorities in Dusheti who worked very hard in the search and rescue effort and now in the investigation.
