Alan Purcell became Deputy Chief of Mission in June 2023. He was Deputy Chief of Mission in Kyiv, Ukraine, from 2021 to 2022. His previous assignments at the State Department in Washington, D.C., include serving as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (2019-2020), and as Deputy Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts (2011- 2013). Other overseas assignments include previous tours in both Georgia and Ukraine, as well as tours in Greece, Moldova, and Hungary. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the National War College. He is married with two children.
