Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Tbilisi, Georgia

Location: Freedom Square in downtown Tbilisi

Event: A large scale political rally is scheduled for today (Thursday, October 29) at 6 pm at Freedom Square in downtown Tbilisi. Anticipate heavy traffic congestion and street closures in the evening. As the Georgian parliamentary election will take place on Saturday, October 31, other sporadic rallies or protests may also take place with little to no notice.

U.S. Government personnel have been advised to avoid areas with a large police presence, which is an indicator of large gatherings and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations.  Those who are in hotels, restaurants or other businesses near protest activity should remain in the building until crowds dissipate.

Actions to Take:

  •         Be aware of your surroundings
  •         Keep a low profile
  •         Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists
  •         Review your personal security plans
  •         Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible
