Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Tbilisi, Georgia

Locations and Events: 

  • September 15 at 3:00 p.m.: A social media-based group will organize a demonstration against government restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic in front of the Georgian Parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue.
  • October 3: The Alliance of Patriots political party is staging a political rally near Parliament.
  • October 20 at 7:00 p.m.:  The “Shame Movement” plans to hold a rally at Freedom Square in the vicinity of Parliament.
  • Sporadic, short notice or unannounced rallies or protests are expected to occur ahead of the Georgian Parliamentary Election scheduled on Saturday, October 31.

U.S. Government personnel have been advised to avoid areas with a large police presence, which is an indicator of large gatherings, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations.  Those who are in hotels, restaurants, or other businesses near protest activity should remain in the building until crowds dissipate.  These activities may pose significant challenges to travelers transiting through downtown Tbilisi.

  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists

  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible
