As we continue to mark 30 years of U.S. – Georgia relations, last week Deputy Chief of Mission Harris visited the opening of a new inmate handicrafts shop on Tsereteli Avenue in Tbilisi. The Embassy’s Office of International Law Enforcement and Narcotics (INL) has provided support to Special Penitentiary Services (SPS) for the past twelve years including staff training and equipment to enhance inmate vocational programming opportunities and is currently partnering with the Vocational and Educational Training Center for Inmates (VETCI) to implement future training, programming, and employment opportunities for inmates. The U.S. Embassy is proud to support this shop, which will expand opportunities for inmates and probationers to develop new work skills and enable them to earn money to pay legal fees, court-ordered restitution, and prepare for release.
