Ambassador Kelly’s Comments to Media at the Repatriation Ceremony for Georgian Soldier Killed in Afghanistan (August 6)

Ambassador Kelly:  I think words really can hardly express the sadness that I feel at the loss of such a fine young man who has already contributed so much to our mutual security.  It was Sergeant Bebiashvili’s third tour in Afghanistan.  I think, all I can really say is that less than a week ago I was out here to greet Vice President Pence.  He came here, in part, to express the thanks of the people of the United States for everything Georgia has done in the fight against terrorism and the fight to bring peace and stability to South Asia.  And, I think today we saw what a high price Georgia is paying for their contribution.  I just would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Sergeant Bebiashvili and to the entire Georgian people for this terrible, terrible sacrifice that they have made.  Thank you.
