The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State and the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa are offering the free online/virtual course “Fake News! : Facts, Information, Disinformation, Misinformation.” The course will take a creative fiction and non-fiction approach to understanding and recognizing information, disinformation, and misinformation.
COURSE DATES: 15 NOVEMBER – 31 DECEMBER, 2018
The submission deadline is November 10, 2018
The course instructor is Christa Fraser, currently on the creative writing faculty at the Karen Merritt Writing Program at the University of California, Merced, where she is an active member of the Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Diversity Initiatives Committees. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a former fiction fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Aspiring writers 15-25 years old from Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan can apply for this course. No writing experience is necessary: if you are interested in creative writing, you can apply! The course will be taught in English. To apply, you must be able to read, write, and converse in English. Your English does not have to be perfect! We’re seeking students who will be enthusiastic and committed to doing the assignments and participating in the discussion forums. The course is virtual/online, so requires online computer access.
