Message for U.S. Citizens: Aggressive Pickpockets on Rustaveli Avenue (Tbilisi)

The U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi is notifying U.S. citizens of the reappearance of aggressive pick pocketing and theft by groups of criminal youth on Tbilisi’s Rustaveli Avenue near the opera and ballet theater. Similar incidents occurred in January 2023 near Freedom Square.  The youth approach victims on their own or in groups and, typically, grab an individual’s arms and legs while the other youth pull items from their pockets. In some cases, they have pulled victims to the ground. The U.S. Embassy reminds you to always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.  Please secure your valuables in your front pockets (wallet, phone, etc.) and be mindful of your purse, backpack, or satchel in public and around large groups of people.
