Ambassador Ian Kelly’s comment about Media Ombudsman and Strasbourg Court (March 8)

Question about the media ombudsman initiative

Ambassador Kelly:

I think that Georgia is a real model for democratic development and we have real confidence in the Prime Minister and his government to continue the growth of democratic institutions.  And as we have said many times, one of the most important institutions is the institution of the media, of independent media.  I can only welcome this idea of having somebody who is dedicated to the idea of media freedom, because there are few things more important, I think, than the protection of liberty in general and I think that the media plays perhaps the most important role in that regard, in the protection of liberty.

Question about the Minister of Foreign Affairs visiting the Strasburg court, “the opposition party views this as the pressure on the court, what would be your comment?”

Ambassador Kelly:

The European Court of Human Rights is a very strong and independent institution. I do not see any kind of danger of intimidation of this institution. I think that the main thing is that we give all the different judicial institutions involved here (the ability) to be able to examine all sides of the case, that is the very basis of justice in any democratic society.  But I think, I would not even suggest that there was any undue pressure put upon the court.
