Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Tbilisi, Georgia

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy (Tbilisi, Georgia) (May 17, 2022)

Location:  Tbilisi, Georgia

Event:  IDAHOBIT

The U.S. Embassy has received multiple reports of groups calling for demonstrations and marches today across Tbilisi against the LGBTQI+ community.  These groups have indicated they will remain on the streets “until dark” to prevent the LGBTQI+ community from gathering in celebration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

The groups have indicated that if, in their patrol of neighborhoods, they witness any LGBTQI+ gatherings, marches, or celebrations, they will physically confront the individual(s) or groups involved, remove signs and banners, and remove the LGBTQI+ participants from the streets.  In July 2021, similar events become suddenly violent, and bystanders were injured.  The groups have a history of confronting any individual they believe supports the LGBTQI+ community, and nationality alone can be a provocation.

Expected locations for today’s activities include:  Republic Square, Liberty Square, Rustaveli Avenue, Baratashvili Avenue, Parliament, the State Chancery, the Holiday Inn, Kashueti Church, and Siono Cathedral.  The groups are expected to march between various locations.

U.S. government personnel are urged to exercise caution, avoid large demonstrations, and not participate in any events outside of official duties.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Review your personal security plans.
