Security Awareness During the Holiday Season

U.S. Embassy Tbilisi, Georgia (December 9, 2019)

Location:  Georgia, countrywide

Event:  During the holiday season, we remind U.S. citizens that there are ongoing threats posed by transnational terrorist organizations and individuals inspired by extremist ideology throughout Europe, including in Georgia.  Extremists continue to focus on locations such as Christmas holiday markets, shopping malls, airports, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, transportation hubs, and other soft targets frequented by tourists.

Large holiday gatherings may provide an attractive target for criminals as well.  Individuals traveling alone and/or those who have been drinking alcohol may be targeted by criminals for assault and robbery.  Holiday parties could result in more inebriated drivers on the roads at night and early morning.  Georgian holiday celebrations often include fireworks, professional or amateur, or even celebratory gunfire.  Be aware that safety standards differ from the United States, and exercise caution accordingly.

Note that in addition to December 25 and New Year’s Eve, some Georgians celebrate Christmas Day on January 7.

Actions to Take:

  • Exercise additional vigilance at holiday festivals and events, places of worship, and locations with large crowds.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Practice good personal security.
  • Use the buddy system. Travel in groups.
  • Be particularly aware of other drivers on the roads at night or early morning.
  • If you drink alcohol, plan responsibly—use a designated driver or take a taxi.
  • Exercise additional caution around fireworks displays.

We wish a happy and safe holiday season to all!
