U.S. Ambassador Joins Georgia Coast Guard for Maritime Operations
Ambassador Dunnigan was pleased to get underway onboard Patrol Boat Dioskuria with the professionals of the Georgia Coast Guard Department of the MIA Border Police. This 34-meter vessel is one of two former U.S. Coast Guard Island Class Patrol Boats that was transferred to Georgia in 2017. In 2023 alone, the Dioskuria made numerous operational, search and rescue, and training patrols in the Black Sea, spending over 1200 hours away from port enforcing the maritime laws of Georgia.
The United States has been a proud partner of Georgia Coast Guard Department since its creation in 1998. During her visit, the Ambassador had an impactful meeting with the Head of the MIA Border Police, General Sharadze, and Director of the Coast Guard Department, Captain Papidze. They discussed steadfast United States support for Georgia’s efforts to strengthen its maritime border as well as recent boarding team deployments in support of NATO Operation Sea Guardian in the Mediterranean Sea.
