To commemorate African-American History Month, the US Embassy’s Information Management Officer Jamal Lewis visited the Rustavi American Corner where he spoke about America’s history with institutional racism. Mr. Lewis spoke about the remarkable progress America has made in race relations during its 240 year-long history. He also discussed, however, the challenges that still remain, including the high rate of prison incarceration of African-America
ns, police violence, and recent race-related unrest in the United States. Georgian youth had a unique opportunity to hear perspectives from an African-American diplomat on these difficult issues. Highlighting the importance of African American History month, which is celebrated every February in the United States, Mr. Lewis encouraged visitors at the American Corner to be tolerant toward different races and nations.
