Vice President Biden travels to Belgium and Germany (February 5)

The Vice President has departed for Brussels, Belgium, the first stop on his trip to Belgium and Germany.

In Brussels, the Vice President will meet with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament. The Vice President will meet with European Council President Donald Tusk, and then will meet jointly with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Vice President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. In all of his meetings with European Union leaders, the Vice President will discuss the conflict between Russia and Ukraine; energy security; the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP) and policies to promote economic growth; counterterrorism cooperation and countering violent extremism; as well as other global issues. The Vice President will also meet with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, with whom he will discuss bilateral relations, countering violent extremism, T-TIP and a host of global issues including the coalition effort to degrade and destroy ISIL.

In Germany, the Vice President will attend the annual Munich Security Conference, where he will deliver remarks on European and global security challenges. While in Munich, he will also hold a joint meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine and international support for Ukraine’s reform efforts, including financial assistance. The Vice President will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss European security and NATO’s Readiness Action Plan, as well as other ongoing efforts to strengthen the Alliance. The Vice President will also meet with a number of European and international leaders attending the Munich Security Conference, including President Rosen Plevneliev of Bulgaria, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of Iraq, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of Georgia, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic of Montenegro, and Iraqi Kurdistan Regional President Masoud Barzani, among others, to discuss bilateral and global issues.

Friday, February 6th — Brussels, Belgium and Munich, Germany

At 11:00 AM LOCAL TIME/5:00 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and the European Parliament Conference of Presidents. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting at the European Parliament.

Afterwards, the Vice President will attend a working lunch with European Council President Donald Tusk at the Justus Lipsius Building. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting at 12:30 PM LOCAL TIME/6:30 AM ET.

At 2:30 PM LOCAL TIME/8:30 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Vice President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini at the Berlaymont Building. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

Later in the afternoon, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Charles Michel of Belgium at the Egmont Palace. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting at 4:00 PM LOCAL TIME/10:00 AM ET.

At 5:30 PM LOCAL TIME/11:30 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with staff and families of the U.S. Embassy Brussels, the U.S. Mission to the European Union, and the U.S. Mission to NATO. This event at the U.S. Embassy Brussels is closed press.

Later in the evening, the Vice President will depart Brussels en route Munich, Germany. The Vice President’s arrival at Munich International Airport at 8:45 PM LOCAL TIME/2:25 PM ET is open press.

Saturday, February 7th – Munich, Germany

In the morning, the Vice President will attend German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s remarks to the Munich Security Conference. This event at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof is open press.

Afterwards, the Vice President will hold a trilateral meeting with Chancellor Merkel and President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.

In the afternoon, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with President Rosen Plevneliev of Bulgaria at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting

Later in the afternoon, the Vice President will deliver remarks to the Munich Security Conference at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. The Vice President’s remarks are open press.

Afterwards, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Commerzbank Building. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

In the evening, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of Iraq at the Commerzbank Building. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

In the morning, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of Georgia at the Westin Grand Munchen Hotel. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

Later in the morning, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Milo Dukanovic of Montenegro at the Westin Grand Munchen Hotel. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

Afterwards, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with Iraqi Kurdistan Regional President Masoud Barzani at the Westin Grand Munchen Hotel. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.

In the evening, the Vice President will depart Munich en route Washington, D.C.
